THE PATHS OF THE SEAS
If we go back a few hundred years, we will find, unsurprisingly, that what the bible said then is what the bible still says today! However; there were things we read then that we couldn't possibly have understood at the time but with today’s knowledge those things can be understood.
You will all have seen on TV those images of pods of stranded whales washed up on the beaches from time to time?
In 2017, over 600 pilot whales stranded themselves on a New Zealand beach in Feb 2025 90 whales washed up on a remote beach in Tasmania.
Have you ever wondered how those whales could have made such a mistake and when they felt the beach underneath them instead of the deep ocean, why didn’t they turn around and head back out to deeper water? Did God make a mistake in their design?
For me this has been a fascinating journey of discovery because the same things happen to turtles who suddenly, one particular year, fail to return to the beaches from where they hatched, this is a disaster for them of course. Quite often whales have beached themselves in one part of the world and in a completely different part of the world and at the same time turtles have also lost the navigational plot and it doesn’t end there. During some autumn migrations, flocks of European birds such as our robins have been recorded arriving in North America instead of heading to their usual wintering grounds in southern Europe!
So let’s go to the Book of Psalms written between 1400 and 450 BC. Let’s take a look at the enigmatic Psalm 8:8 "The birds of the air, and the fish of the sea that pass through the paths of the seas."
The paths of the seas? What paths, have you ever seen any paths in the seas? No, you as a human being won’t ever see them because you don’t possess the chemicals in your brain that some other creatures do such as whales, robins, salmon and pigeons. Some animals have tiny crystals of magnetite (a magnetic mineral) in their cells, which respond to Earth's magnetic field, helping them to navigate. (I wish I had that)!
Have you ever seen images of the earth showing the myriad lines of the magnetic field that surround the earth? Well, those lines go right around the earth, through the air and the sea and to the very bottom of the sea to the earth’s core. Are you starting to get the picture now? Lines in the air, lines in the sea, paths in the seas… A eureka moment?
The following is only very recent research and suggests that many marine animals have the ability to detect Earth's magnetic field to navigate vast distances but the field shifts from time to time & there’s the clue.
Just as birds use magnetic cues for migration, whales and fish and turtles follow these "invisible roads" in the ocean, similar to how humans use highways. These pathways would be literal, but unseen (to us) "paths in the seas"—not currents, but natural navigation routes; pathways, tracks if you wish, that they can see or feel and follow for 1000s of miles while we can’t see a thing.
This information strengthens Psalm 8:8 even more by showing us yet again that all this was already written in the scriptures. There are actually“ paths in the seas”. We didn’t know that until very recently and certainly didn’t know it 2000 year ago! BUT IT WAS IN THE BOOK
